June 25, 2006: My 20th birthday, in Salzburg, at The Sound of Music Dinner Show, which everyone good-naturedly attended for my benefit, where I drank, at the prodding of one of the other girls, “vodka sunrises” (which she instructed the perplexed Austrian bartender on how to make), and, head spinning, was brought up onstage to do, not kidding, an “Austrian folk dance” (notice the woman in period costume curtsying off camera), and then went back to my seat, and laughed and laughed and laughed, until they came out and sang “Edelweiss,” and I was suddenly moved, and teared up a little bit.
We ended the night, as Americans in Europe do, at an Irish Pub.
Nasty Habits
Taking taxi cabs.
Sleeping with my contacts in most nights.
Letting empty bottles of water collect under my bed.
Using bottled water instead of tap in the first place.
